Visiting Artist: Vanessa German

A self-described citizen artist, Vanessa German is a performer, poet, sculptor, and activist who explores the power of art and love as a transformative force in communities. Her sculptures combine seemingly disparate items—doll parts, antique tins, cowrie shells, scraps of fabric, toys, keys—into wholly new constructions: power figures that represent Black survival and resilience.  One such power figure, The Great American Roller Coaster Ride, is currently on view in the Art Museum of West Virginia University’s exhibition, True Colors: Picturing Identity.
