BioTech and MedTech: The Future of AI
About this event
Join Vantage Ventures as celebrate National Entrepreneurship with an interactive panel featuring our Vantage Entrepreneurs and Community.
Our panel, BioTech and MedTech: The Future of AI, will be moderated by Dr. Brad Price, Assistant professor of Business Data Analytics in the Management Information Systems (MIS) Department at the John Chambers College of Business and Economics at West Virginia University.
Come hear how our Vantage Entrepreneurs are blazing a path to a healthier life for all of us with biotechnology, medical, life sciences, and healthcare information technology. Our roundtable discussion will follow a specific format, covering the relevant topics and allow space for questions and networking.
OUR GUEST PANELISTS:
Dr. Eric Loeb
Client Facing Data Scientist at DataRobot
Dr. Eric Loeb assists state and federal agencies implementing AI and machine learning, including the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute in Morgantown, WV. He's currently a customer facing data scientist at DataRobot, where he assists federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, with the planning and execution of their data science programs.
Dr. Loeb built the first website at every level from the White House to the City of Cambridge while pursuing his MIT Ph.D. in cognitive and computational neuroscience. He subsequently served as the analytics lead for a winning Presidential campaign. As a political appointee in the DoD, Dr. Loeb established the operational test requirements for the DoD and VA's integrated electronic health records system.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Daryl Reynolds
Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at SwifTAG Systems
Vantage Entrepreneur Daryl Reynolds serves as the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at SwifTAG Systems which is a ground-breaking, cost-effective laboratory animal management technology company.
Since 2002, Daryl also serves as an Associate Professor at the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at West Virginia University where he participates in research and teaching in the areas of signal processing and wireless communications.
Daryl holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder, as well as a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University.
Zachary Wright
Founder and Chief Executive Officer at SwifTAG Systems
Vantage Entrepreneur Zachary Wright started SwifTAG Systems in order to facilitate research through technology. SwifTAG Systems concepts and products were conceived by active researchers in the medical field who recognized the dramatic inefficiencies of existing small animal management systems and processes. Its mission is to bring high technology and medical research together to drive down costs and increase the time researchers spend doing actual research. They envision laboratories where animal management systems are functional, low maintenance, efficient, and as easy to use as a well-designed smartphone app and want to see researchers acquire the highest quality data to reduce overall animal usage and time spent managing laboratory animal logistics.
Zachary holds a Bachelors Degree in Biology from West Virginia University and a M.D. and Ph.D. in Biological and Biomedical Sciences from West Virginia University.
Dr. Sergiy Yakovenko
Co-Founder of Neurowired LLC
Dr. Yakovenko is a computational neuroscientist and a neurophysiologist addressing the questions of neuromechanical integration in motor control. His research program is focused on developing intuitive and reliable neural interfaces capable of the real-time decoding of motor intent and controlling dexterous prosthetic devices.
As a Vantage Entrepreneur and MedTech start-up, Neurowired offers human-machine interface through use of biomimetic analytical tools. By placing an electronic cuff on an amputee, its musculoskeletal dynamics (MSD) offers real-limb control in virtual / augmented reality and prosthetics. Neurowired’s backend system enables immediate feedback at low-latency and its innovative, real-time and intuitive biomimetic approach decodes electromyograms into actions. This product’s hardware and software capabilities have applicability in the defense, gaming and financial services industries.
Dr. Yakovenko holds a Bachelor of Science in Biophysics from Kharkiv National University and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Alberta.
PANEL HOST:
Dr. Brad Price
Assistant professor of Business Data Analytics in the Management Information Systems (MIS) Department at the John Chambers College of Business and Economics, West Virginia University
Brad Price, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of Business Data Analytics in the Management Information Systems (MIS) Department at the John Chambers College of Business and Economics at West Virginia University. Dr. Price is a native of Madison, West Virginia, and holds dual bachelor’s degrees from West Virginia University in Industrial Mathematics and Statistics and Mathematics. He received his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Minnesota School of Statistics, under the advisement of Dr. Adam Rothman and Dr. Charles Geyer.
Following successful completion of his graduate work, he joined the faculty in the Department of Management Science at the School of Business Administration, University of Miami, in the role of clinical assistant professor and director of the M.S. in Business Analytics, the big data program at the University of Miami.
His research focuses on the use of data science in business and, specifically, in the development of data mining and machine learning methodology. With the various applications of these methods across fields such as information technology, marketing, engineering and the social sciences, Price is specifically interested in creating scalable algorithms so that organizations can make the best use of the massive amount of data they have collected. To make the best use of these methods inside the industry, Price is also interested in software development to make sure businesses have access to the tools and resources they need.
Dr. Price has also won multiple teaching awards at both the University of Minnesota as a graduate student and in his role at the University of Miami. He has taught statistics and data science courses at the undergraduate, graduate, MBA, Ph.D. and Executive levels. He has a specific interest in data science program development at business schools at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as executive education on the topics crucial to the analytics field. He believes in training students to the methodology that will make them agile in the data science and analytics marketplaces as the industries’ technology continues to evolve. His main focus at B&E is on the statistics and data mining courses in the M.S. in Business Data Analytics program.
