Art Museum of WVU
30 Fine Arts Drive
Morgantown, WV 26506
This event is free and open to the public.
Inspired by the Art Museum of WVU’s exhibitions featuring photographs, workshop participants will explore the art and science of photography and create their own unique artworks using light and images. (Suitable for ages 6-12)
In Concert: Photography and the Violin is on view at the Art Museum of WVU through May 14. It features over 300 photographs of violins that span time, culture, and geography. The exhibit not only documents the history of the violin and its cultural importance, but also the development of photography as a technology and art form - from the earliest daguerreotypes to contemporary digital photography. Participants in the Photoplay workshop will learn about photographic processes and techniques by creating their own pin-hole cameras and practicing view-finding in the Nath Sculpture Garden.
This activity brings together both artistic and scientific processes by examining the interaction of light with photosensitive materials while encouraging the development of a unique, creative point of view.
Printing the Picture is an exhibition of images originally made with a camera (photographs and films) and then transformed through artistic processes. The exhibit features a basket by Gail Tremblay that is woven entirely of strands of film and a print by Andy Warhol where layered photographs are used as source material to create a silkscreen print. Inspired by the idea of using images to make prints, workshop participants will learn the process of image transfer using gel plates and sourced magazine images. Weather permitting, the group will also create cyanotypes in the Nath Sculpture Garden, using light reactive ink to make images of natural objects.
