The Community Coalition for Social Justice invites you to join us to explore the theme of “Kids in Action” during our Thirteenth Annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Celebration on Monday, January 21, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at the Metropolitan Theatre, 369 High Street, Morgantown. Main Street Morgantown co-sponsors this family-friendly event, while the City of Morgantown and Rachel Wood of Virtus Wealth Solutions provide financial support. There will be music in the lobby before the event. Mayor Bill Kawecki will welcome the audience. Al Anderson and Friends will perform, along with area children’s choirs. We have invited children to share essays about Dr King, and Jeremy Thomas will be reading a story about young activists. Look for posters by art students from St. Francis Central Catholic School in downtown businesses and a banner across High street to promote the event. CCSJ will also have social justice-themed bumper stickers and buttons for sale. The League of Women Voters and Morgantown Human Rights Commission will have information tables in the lobby. Admission is free, but CCSJ asks that those attending bring donations for the Scott's Run Settlement House Backpack Snack Program that provides food for area school children over the weekend, which distributed an estimated 19,680 backpacks at eleven schools in Monongalia County during the last school year. Sample foods needed are individual servings of graham crackers, animal crackers, cereal boxes, fruit snacks, Jell-O, ravioli, and applesauce. A link to a complete list and more information is available at srsh.org/home/backpack_snack_program.
